In laboratory setup, safety consideration should address various aspect such as floor design, fire and OSH regulations, international safety standard, electrical and gas requirements and material usage especially chemicals and electrical equipments. We use tools such as PEFS (Process Engineering Flow Scheme) and Hazard Analysis to look into design and operation safety for a laboratory.

What is a VAV Fume hood? When do I need it?
VAV (variable air volume) hoods are programmed to maintain a constant face velocity regardless of sash position. VAV hoods incorporate a closed loop control system, either changing the speed of the blower or opening of valves, which continuously measures and adjusts the amount of air being exhausted according to the sash opening to maintain the required average face velocity. The addition of the VAV fume hood control system helps save air conditioning cost and at the same time maintain the hood's ability to protect against exposure to chemical vapors or other contaminants.
What is a CAV Fume hood? When do I need it?
CAV stands for Constant Air Volume. Fume hoods designed with CAV feature maintain constant extraction air volume regardless of sash opening. A well design by pass route is important to help maintain the face velocity at all time and sweeping clean of any “dead space” in the hoods. Many general fume hoods are CAV.
When is it time to do maintenance services for my fume hood?
It is recommended that you do the maintenance at least once a year. However this also depends on the frequency of the fume hood usage. Please contact Fisher Scientific NLS SEA Team to make an appointment to service your fume hood.
What are the main characteristics of Fisher Scientific Fume hood compared to others?
Fisher Scientific fume hoods are carefully designed with detail studies on air flow mechanic. It has one of the best performance, if not the best, on containment efficiency. Fisher Scientific fume hood is also the first one accepted under UL1805 and many other standards. Fisher Scientific fume hoods use polyresin, stainless steel as liners. Never material such as FRP (Fiber Re-inforced Polyerster) that may cause fire incidents.
